It would be helpful to know the number rows an explore search yields and to know in advance if it is more than 5,000 before downloading (e.g. if there are more than 5,000 records we have to arrow through 200 records at a time to get to the end - which is time consuming)

I understand your frustration ... this was an unfortunate necessity in order to speed up the results on Explore. A lot of queries were timing out and producing errors and so we had to take creative action. There is a chance that if we change our platform in the future we may be able to handle the count; but at the moment this was an "a or b" choice we had to make.
